How to prevent photovoltaic cables from being damaged by mice and termite? May 26,2022

As we know, many photovoltaic cables need to be buried deep in the city ground for a long time or exposed to sunny ecological zones, which are inevitably infested by rats and termites. Therefore, we need to choose PV cables that can prevent termites and rats. If you have the need to buy cables, you need to know the following knowledge.

Ⅰ. Why ordinary PV cables are easy to be eaten by termites and rats?
In addition to the destructive effects of environmental factors such as heat, oxygen, light, chemical erosion and mechanical stress, wire and cable sheath materials are also nibbled by termites, rats, and other creatures. With the development of urban construction, cable lines from the overhead to the underground buried development trend, more susceptible to termites, rats, and other organisms to eat corrosion damage. Solar cable commonly used polyvinyl chloride, low smoke halogen-free flame retardant materials such as termites, rats, and other organisms have poor corrosion resistance. Solar cables with this material as the outer sheath do not have anti-termite and anti-rodent functions.
When the cable insulation is chewed through, it may cause a short circuit and an electrical fire. Therefore, if there is a risk of pests, rodents or termites, we need to consider adding a protective barrier or additive to the cable to prevent damage.

Ⅱ. How to prevent photovoltaic cables from being damaged by mice and termites?

1. Chemical additives to achieve termite prevention effect

This method mainly involves adding rodent repellents, which are strong irritant chemicals, to the sheathing material. A typical additive is capsaicin. It is an irritant to mammals, including human beings, and any tissue that comes into contact with it will produce a burning sensation. It is characterized by fast effect, high efficiency, simple method and small area restriction.

2. Physical barrier to achieve anti-termite and anti-rodent effect

The outer sheath of the cable is made of materials that will not be bitten by rodents, termites, etc., such as stainless steel and hard plastics to achieve anti-termite and anti-rodent effects. Physical barriers also include conduit and armored tape to prevent pests and rodents from chewing on the cable. For termite-proof fiber optic cables, the use of fiberglass yarn is popular because it can be uncomfortable when chewed by rodents.
Nylon is a tough material that termites cannot chew, and the addition of a nylon barrier to the sheathing material is also an effective long-term physical barrier.

Ⅲ. SUNKEAN's Rodent and Termite Proof Cable
SUNKEAN's termite- and rodent-proof PV1-F solar cables utilize a nylon shielding layer that provides effective long-term protection against electrical fires caused by rodent and ant bites.
At the same time, the low-smoke halogen-free sheath material is safe and environmentally friendly, and can effectively prevent fire damage to personnel and equipment.

If you know that your cables will be installed in an environment that may be infested by pests, choosing anti-termite cables and anti-rodent cables may be necessary and useful, please contact our sales manager, we will be happy to provide you with professional services.
